Cameroon, like many African countries, is undergoing a democratic evolution. This case study explores the perceptions of Cameroonian citizens about democracy, based on a survey conducted in 2024. The collected data provides a unique insight into the expectations, criticisms, and hopes of Cameroonians regarding democratic governance.

Project Context

  • Objective: To understand the level of support for democracy in Cameroon and assess citizens’ satisfaction with current democratic practices.

  • Challenge: Despite progress, Cameroon still faces challenges such as corruption, limited political freedoms, and weak accountability of elected officials.

  • Methodology: Survey conducted among 1,200 Cameroonian adults between February and March 2024.

Proposed Solution

  • Key Indicators: Support for democracy, rejection of autocratic regimes, satisfaction with the functioning of democracy, perception of the rule of law, and corruption.

Results

1. Support for Democracy

  • 83% of Cameroonians support democracy as a system of governance.

  • 74% reject autocratic regimes, including one-party rule and military dictatorship.

2. Satisfaction with Democracy

  • Only 29% of citizens are satisfied with the current functioning of democracy.

  • 44% consider Cameroon to be a democracy, but with minor problems.

3. Rule of Law and Political Freedoms

  • 51% believe that political freedoms are respected (somewhat or entirely free).

  • 45% think that the president respects laws and courts.

4. Corruption

  • A majority of respondents perceive corruption as a major issue, particularly at the presidential level.
